Our First-Ever Alumni Reunion

I’ve often thought about how much fun it would be to bring together our First School graduates and their families for a reunion event. After 31 years, The First School has a far-reaching extended family, and we’ve even started to enroll a second generation of preschoolers whose parents attended the school.

This January, with the support of alumni parent volunteers, we plan to hold our first annual Alumni Reunion. Our goal is to help maintain the close ties and friendships that started among families during their preschool years. We hope this event will help you to reconnect and catch up. Our graduates will have a chance to visit the school, play or mingle with First School friends, see some of their teachers and share special memories. Light refreshments will be served. So mark your calendar for Saturday, January 20, 2007 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Broadway school.

Over the years, The First School has grown in many ways. The school has expanded in size, and our facilities have had a few makeovers. Still, I’m most proud of the strong sense of community among First School families and our on-going tradition of community outreach. The generosity and involvement of our families are amazing. I hope that our alumni network will help many of you stay in touch and provide you with a link to our community

I look forward to welcoming many of you back to The First School!

Flashback

In 1975, Ellie and Ben Spezell started a small, innovative preschool in a storefront that had been a taco stand on Olympic Boulevard. They created a curriculum based on respect for each child’s unique personality and developmental level. They focused on helping students separate from home and enter the world with security, confidence and a joy of learning. Ellie and Ben envisioned an inclusive school community that fostered the type of friendships and support systems needed by families with young children.

Ellie worked with the children “out front,” while Ben worked behind the scenes. Over 25 years, the school grew from one storefront location into today’s toddler, preschool and pre-kindergarten programs with 275 students on three campuses. While we have grown in many ways, The First School remains true to its original vision, and the heart of the school has stayed the same.
